Traveling With SRAM eTap

Aloha from Maui!

Sorry for the long break but it has been a very busy winter at Maui Cyclery., but we are back with a friendly tip for those of you who ride bikes equipped with SRAM eTap.

Unless you are one of those who read the instructions cover to cover you may not be aware that you are supposed to remove your eTap derailleur batteries when you travel.  If left on during transport the batteries wake up and actually draw power when they sense motion.  This leaves you with two dead batteries when you get to your final destination and are raring to ride.

The best thing to do for shipping, air travel, and even longer road trips is to remove both derailleur batteries and reinstall the red protective covers that come with both the derailleurs and batteries.  This will help insure that you are fully charged and ready to ride when you get to where you are going..

See you on the road,

Donnie

How To Measure Your Bike

Whether you rent a bike from us or join us on a tour it is our goal to make sure we get you as comfortable of a fit on our bike as you have on your bike at home.  In order to do this we ask that you take a few measurements from your bike.

With the pedal at the bottom of the pedal stroke and the crank in line with the seat tube measure from the spindle of the pedal to the top of your seat.

If you are not sure what size frame you ride then measure from the center of the bottom bracket to the TOP of the seat tube.

If you are not sure what size frame you ride then measure from the center of the bottom bracket to the TOP of the seat tube.

The other measurement you need when you are unsure of your frame size is the Horizontal Top Tube. Measure from the center of the steerer tube to the center of the seat tube in a straight line.

Bonus points - If you want to measure the drop from your seat to your handlebars use a yard stick or something long and straight. Hold it level on the seat and measure from the yard stick to the top of the bars.

If you have your measurements from a professional bike fit you can forward those to us at rentals@gocyclingmaui.com just reference the last name that the rental reservation is under and the date you are scheduled to pick up your bikes.

While these measurements will allow us to get very close to your fit at home every make and model of bike has different geometry and sometimes even the same make and model from year to year.  We will do everything we can to get you in a familiar, comfortable riding position. We have a wide variety of stems that we can switch out on our bikes.  We also have a variety of saddles to chose from, however if you really love your saddle please feel free to bring it along.

Summer Riding Tips

Long Days and warm weather are a great combo for making you want to get out and ride more.  Here are a few tips to help make sure you have a good ride every time.

  • Hydrate More - Hydration is always important, but even more so when the temps get hotter.  Try to drink 30-50% more than you would on a cool weather ride.
  • Electrolytes - Replacing electrolytes is crucial on warmer days.  Products like Fizz or Enduroltytes Extreme from Hammer Nutrition will help offset the loss of electrolytes and help prevent cramping.
  • Dress Right - A good quality jersey with a combination of breathe-ability and sun protection is a must.  Arm coolers are also a great idea for providing 100% sun protection and help keep you cool.
  • Sunscreen - Sun protection is essential  all year long, but in the summer when you are sweating more you need to pick a good sunscreen that will hold up to perspiration.  We like Raw Elements Eco 30 for it's enviromentally friendly ingredients and it's ability to hold up to sweat.

Get out and ride!

Spring Bike Maintenance

Maui doesn't really experience the change in seasons that most places do, so riders here rarely have a season that they put their bikes away.  That being said everyone needs to maintain their bikes, and spring is a great time to get the major stuff taken care of.

If you ride even a moderate amount there is a good chance that your chain needs to be replaced at least once a year.  The rest of your drivetrain should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected for wear and replaced if needed.  Changing your shift and brake cables is also a good idea to do at least one a year.  Brake pads, both caliper and disc should also be checked and replaced as needed.  If you are riding disc brakes it is always wise to replace the rotors and pads at the same time.  Using new pads on your old rotors will cause the pads to wear faster and probably make more noise than you will like.  If you are riding a bike with electronic shifting you obviously don't have to worry about your cables, but Shimano, Campy, and SRAM are continuously releasing firmware updates that can do everything from help extend battery life to adding new features like Shimano's newly released Synchro Shifting.  If you ride an electronic groupset ask your mechanic if there are any firmware updates and have them installed.  It shouldn't cost too much and just like your phone or computer it is always best to be up to date.  Spring is also the perfect time to put on a new set of tires to handle all the summer miles you are about to log.

So stop by your favorite local bike shop and get your ride dialed in for summer.  See you on the road.

Winter in Paradise

Ready for winter on Maui?

I guess winter is upon the mainland US and Canada now. That’s what I’m hearing. Temperatures are getting colder, which means it's time to get your Maui cycling trip planned.

Andrew Talansky and me at Ho'okipa Beach.  Hitting the water is always such a great reward after a ride.
